Kashmir in Winter Pictures

Kashmir, also known as Cashmere, is the northerwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Today Kashmir refers to a much larger area that includes the regions of Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh. The main "Valley of Kashmir" is a low-lying fertile region surrounded by magnificent mountains and fed by many rivers. It is renowned for its natural beauty and quaint lifestyle.

Kashmir is derived from the Sanskrit "Kashyapa" + "Mira", which means the mountain range of sage Kashyapa. Srinagar, the ancient capital, lies alongside Dal Lake and is famous for its canals and houseboats. Srinagar (alt. 1,600 m. or 5,200 ft.) served as a favoured summer capital for many foreign conquerors who found the heat of the Northern Indian plains in the summer season to be oppressive. Just outside the city are the beautiful Shalimar, Nishat and Chashmashahi gardens created by Mughal emperors.

Kashmir was one of the most important centres of Buddhism in India. Kashmir retained a strong influence of Buddhism despite the influence of Kashmir Saivism and the various Sufi Orders of Islam. Following are some gorgeous pictures of Kashmir in Winter.

Polar lights - Aurora Borealis

Following is the FunOnTheNet EXCLUSIVE photo reporting from Moscow, Russia on the night of September, 15th 2005

An aurora is an optical phenomenon characterised by colourful displays of light in the night sky. Solar radiation acts with various gases in an atmosphere of the Earth, giving rise to polar light. Nitrogen gives a lilac shade, oxygen - red or green, sodium - yellow and the results are surprising - a curtain, a crown, a tape, a spiral, an arch. The shapes created are very beautiful and unusual.

This week marks the start of big solar activity. Scientists from all world agreed that it is the biggest phenomenon in history. In all the newspapers it has been written that on the night of September 15th, there will be beautiful polar light in Moscow - the phenomenon is very rare and occurs only on the Far North.

Polar Lights Aurora

As soon as night fell, my friends and I gathered together. Having taken a videocamera, the still camera we rushed off on a train. We went to the surburbs of the city - where it is not so cloudy. In a forest park the real fairy tale began - In our lifes we have not seen anything like this!

There we took photographs 2 hours on end, but time drew short, and we decided to return to city.

By then the clouds had disappeared, also we already tried to take photographs in the city. At last we have called up our friends from the astronomical institute. They had just processed the pictures received from space.

On Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, aurorae are caused by the interaction of solar wind particles with the planet's magnetic field, and are therefore most prominent in higher latitudes near the magnetic poles. For this reason, the aurora occurring in Earth's Northern Hemisphere is called the aurora borealis, or northern lights; and in the Southern Hemisphere the aurora australis.

Dubai to build World's Tallest Arch Bridge

They do things differently in Dubai. They like their stuff bigger, taller, and more expensive than anywhere else. So it only makes sense that the world's tallest arch bridge would be bult there. This bridge, envisioned by NY architecture firm Fxfowle, will be the largest and tallest arch bridge in the world, at one mile long and 670 feet tall. Construction is due to wrap up in 2012 after running some $817 million dollars.

Dubai tallest Arch Bridge

If any real city on our planet can claim an active stake in creating the urban landscape of the future, it's probably Dubai. Artificial islands arranged in the shape of the world? Check. The world's only seven-star hotel? Check. And in 2012, it will also become home to the largest, tallest arch bridge ever. It really looks beautiful and amazing, Dubai is building very fast.

Lake Berryessa - Morning Glory Spillway

Located in northern California, the Monticello Dam's is the largest morning glory spillway all over the world. This funnel-shaped outlet, allows water to bypass the dam when it reaches capacity, as it swallows a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second (1370 m³/s).

The distance from the funnel to the exit point - which is situated in the south side of the canyon - is about 700 feet.  This type of spillway is basically a giant cement funnel. The hole's largest diameter is 72 feet and narrows to about 28 feet. For obvious reasons, swimming near the glory hole is both prohibited and stupid. There are buoys strung across the lake to discourage boaters and swimmers from approaching the glory hole and the dam. Furthermore, the glory hole is well fenced off from the land.
